ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION CAMPAIGN

2022/2023

The Balearic Islands and the sea

Endemics of the Balearic Islands

PGarriga plants

The Planet we have left

OBJECTIVES

To create awareness of the marine environment, species of flora and the fauna of the coastal areas. To teach schoolchildren about their closest natural surroundings: animals and plants. To promote respect for the environment. Raising awareness among participants. Environmental awareness for the development of good practices in the natural environment and sustainability.

DEVELOPMENT

The “Balears i la Mar”, “Plantes de garriga” and “Endemismes” magazines were republished. Ten trips were organised to Son Serra de Marina (Santa Margalida) for the Balearic Islands and the Sea activity, with the aim of raising awareness of the marine environment and its current problems. The rest of the activities, Endemisms, Garrigue plants and The Earth we have Left, were carried out at the Llacunes de Can Figuera (Binissalem). The garrigue plants, so typical of the Mediterranean, are unique and are very present throughout the archipelago; it is important to know and appreciate them.

At the same time, the Binissalem secondary school (with pupils from Binissalem, Consell and Alaró) took part in the collection of microplastics and other waste from the protected area of Son Serra de Marina: dune area, salt marshes, beaches, slabs and rocky areas. During the three days of this activity, 48 bags of 100 litres were filled with microplastics, as well as other bulky waste.

As in the previous campaign, a drawing and writing competition was held dedicated exclusively to the Balearic Islands and the Sea activity. On the 8th of June, prizes were awarded to the 6 best drawings and 6 best essays, as well as a special prize to a pupil of the school for her perseverance and sensibility during the cleaning of the coast.
